The 38th session of the IFAD Governing Council has just started! The King of Tonga Tupou VI, The President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramami Mahama and the Italian Minister for Economy and Finance, Mr Pier Carlo Padoan, opened this year forum. The Asia and the Pacific acquired two new member states: The Federated States of Micronesia and Palau!
This year's special events include discussions with Carlo Petrini, President of International Slow Food Movement, the Rockefeller Foundation, Indigenous People World Representatives, Oxfam International and the launching of the International Day of Family Remittances.
Turkey will also provide a briefing on the G20 Presidency and Algeria's Rural Renewal Programme will be presented as an example of successful rural growth.
Up to now IFAD has provided over USD 16.3 billion in grants and low interest loans to projects that have reached more than 438 million people. IFAD President, Kanayo F. Nwanze reiterated that the Fund would continue building partnerships and "going beyond aid" by seeking out new sources of financing for additional investment in rural people.
