UNTL Research Maize Storage Losses Under Traditional System

Author: Acacio Guterres

The University of Timor Lorasae ("UNTL") was contracted by the Bidon Halot Batar project to conduct a year long research on maize losses under the traditional system of storing maize in the five BHB target districts. 150 households participated in this research with 6 cobs per household taken monthly and sampled for maize losses due to rats, weevils, chickens, mould etc. The research results revealed that if we assume that an average maize growing household produces 1 tonne of maize and consumes regularly throughout the year, maize losses under the traditional system total 32% (weevils 19%, rats 9%, chicken 1% and mould 3%).
