Ms. Chea Sakan lives in Srah Keo village, Krang Svay commune, Preah Sdach district, Prey Veng province and she is also a group member of local IGRF. Her husband works as construction worker, she has two children and only his husband and her work to support the family. She grows rice straw mushroom since many years and became skilful: she can grow 5 rows (50 m2) per cycle, and her target output is around 26 Kg/cycle, price is in average 12,000 Riels/Kg. She said that it was easy to get money from growing and selling this mushroom in a short time period (only 13 days per production cycle). There no need for a lot of equipment and raw materials: spores, rice straw, yeast, and bucket. Before the local mushroom agribusiness cluster was established she knew already how to grow rice mushrooms but the yield was not very high. She learned her technique from neighbours and she only grew mushrooms during the dry season. After joining the newly established agribusiness cluster, she was able to increase her yields by adopting new techniques such as how to keep spores in safe conditions and use them at the right time, how to prepare rows, how to use yeast combined with spores, and how to burn the rows after row making. With these new techniques, her family can now earn USD 400 per month while the expenditure for household consumption and needs is about USD 250. Two main local collectors are buying mushrooms every day. Ms. Chab Chan is one of the group member and she also collects from members and supplies to retailers in Nak Louerng and Phnom Penh market. She can buy around 60 Kg/day (at 12,000 Riels/Kg) and if members can produce more, she will buy all. Mr. Chom Sariet also collects mushrooms around 50 Kg/day (12,000 Riels/Kg) to supply retailers at Nak Louerng market. Ms. Chea Sakan mentioned that when she started being active in the mushroom agribusiness cluster she learnt about market flow, how to communicate with all actors and build good relationships with them, how to share experiences and information on market prices and coordinate supply with buyers. Such dialogue and coordination is supported by PDAFF with SNV methodological coaching. In the future, she wants to increase the production and to invest her own capital to buy rice straw to keep a stock. She would like to get more technical support so that she can grow also during the rainy season like the place she visited during the exposure trip.
