Improving the nutritional status of poor rural households particularly women and children through providing them with the skills, knowledge and initial inputs they require in order to engage in profitable dairy goat production is the core objective of the dairy goat project which is implemented in selected districts of Nangarhar and Baghlan provinces. One of the components of the Rural Microfinance and Livestock Support Program funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), this project is implemented by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and builds on the achievements of a similar grant-funded intervention implemented earlier in both Afghanistan and Pakistan by ICARDA with IFAD support. So far, 1,000 goats have been distributed in both Baghlan and in Nangarhar provinces. Suttan village, Dara-e-Noor District, in Nangarhar is one of the villages selected so far for implementation.
