Training of Trainers in Farmers Field School for RNR Staff of Eastern Dzongkhags at RNR RDC, Wengkhar, Monggar

Author: Ngawang & Phuentsho Wangdi

The MAGIP project design outlines the use of Farmer Field School (FFS) as the main mechanism for delivering goods and services of the project. The FFS is a renowned participatory community empowerment approach which has already been successfully practiced in Bhutan. However the Project Steering Committee (PSC) during the 1st PSC meeting on 21st June 2011 highlighted that assuming that the past FFS concepts implemented by various other projects were successful then there should be adequate FFS local capacity to train the extension staff in the 6 eastern Dzongkhags. With this endorsement, local FFS experts were recruited to train the first batch of Renewable Natural Resource (RNR) staff in the project Dzongkhags instead of international technical assistance (TA) as envisaged in the project design.

A week long Training of Trainers (ToT) on Farmer Field Schools (FFS) was held at RNR Research Development Center (RNR  RDC), Wengkhar, Monggar for 35 RNR Officials of 6 eastern districts (23-28 Jan 2012). The training was funded by MAGIP. After this training, 2 pilot sites were selected in each district to test the FFS approach. Based on the results of the pilot sites, further FFS activities will be planned if successful. The other extension approach Out Reach Program (ORP) championed by RDC Wengkhar will also be implemented in parallel with the FFS.
