Buguias LIGs receive 350K livelihood grant
Five Livelihood Interest Groups (LIGs) in Buguias, Benguet received Php350, 000.00 livelihood grant from the Second Cordillera Highland Agricultural Resource Management Project (CHARMP2) on Sept. 16, 2016. This was after the LIGs passed the thorough livelihood assistance fund (LAF) Assessment conducted by members of the concerned provincial, municipal and Project staff representatives.
These LIGs namely Active Group of Amgaleyguey who are Able to Manage and Answer Needs for the Growth of members (100,000); Sinipsip Vendors Association (50,000); Abatan Rural Improvement Club (100,000); Cabuguiasan Farmers Association (50,000), and Anus, Layad, Aywanan, Salun-at, Kabadang Association (50,000) venture into rice and LPG retailing and peanut butter processing. The groups, except ALASKA, proposed rice retailing as their business to supply rice needs of the community since, generally, Buguias is concentrated in the production of highland vegetables. It is known as the leading producer of highland vegetables in Benguet.
“Agtitinnulong, anus, ayat ken kinasalun-at nga agtrabaho tapnu agprosper ti business (Helping one another, kindness, love and healthiness to work are the key for the business to prosper),” replied Zenaida Bayang, president of ALASKA, when asked about their strategy in maintaining their business.
Project Manager Cameron Odsey, on the other hand, reiterated that the Project wants to promote and encourage group business in the locality. “Ti kayat tayo kuma nga maaaramid, nu ada negosyo, diyay nga negosyo ket patarayen ti grupo haan nga maymaysa laeng (What we want is, if there is business, that business should be run by group not by individual),” he said.
The LIGs committed to ‘do more, explore more’ in their businesses and to implement strictly their approved enhanced business plans and policies as they are hoping for the sustainability of the livelihood opportunities from CHARMP2.
PPDO representative Mercy Guisdan then encouraged them to be willing and open towards monitoring and assessment for further improvement and development of their local businesses. It was also emphasized that participation during meetings or assemblies plays vital role in maintaining and strengthening one’s group.//
