IFAD Designs a New Project for Smallholder Farmers in Bangladesh: Aide Memoire Endorsed by the Government

The Aide Memoire of the IFAD design mission for Smallholder Agricultural Competitiveness Project (SACP) has been endorsed at a meeting at Economic Relations Division (ERD) on 23 March, 2017 in Dhaka.  This new IFAD project will support smallholder farmers in Bangladesh increasing their incomes and livelihood resilience through demand-driven productivity growth, crop diversification and marketing in a changing climate condition.  SACP includes four components: (i) Enhanced production of High Value Crops (HVC) and technology adoption; (ii) Processing and marketing HVC; (iii) Climate resilient surface water management and (iv) Project management. It will be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture while Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will provide technical support.

The project will cover 30 upzilas under 12 districts of Southern Bangladesh. Peter Yuexiong Situ led the design mission. The wrap-up meeting was chaired by Sultana Afroz, Additional Secretary, Coordination and Nordic wing. Among others Bangladesh CPM Benoit Thierry and FAO Country Representative Susan Lorraine Lautze were present. The final design mission of SACP will take place in August, 2017.
